General
He must present a gay, lively and active appearance, bone
and strength in a small compass are essentials. But he must not be cloddy. The
terrier like the Hound must in no way be leggy, but also must not be short on
the leg. He should stand like a clerely made hunter, coverina a lot of ground,
yet with a short back. Characteristics Alert,
quick of movement, keen of expression, on tiptoe of expectation. Temperament
He is a dog with friendly charm, as most Terriers are, a
pleasant companion with a love of exercise, never lazy, always ready for a game,
whether just a romp on the lawn, or the more serious matter of chasing rabbits.
He is clean, mannerly in the house, quiet except when he feels that intrusion
of some sort is imminent, when he becomes one of the best guards. History
The modern Fox Terrier started about 1860 from which time
pedigrees can be traced. One of the first dogs of note was "Old Jock" who was
first shown in Birmingham in 1862. He was said to have been a smart well balanced
Terrier, with perhaps too much daylight under him, and perhaps wanting some in
jaw power. But he was at least away from the Bull Terrier type. Origin
He started life in England as the old English Terrier, the
sort of dog mentioned by Dame Juliana Berners in 1486, and a century later by
Dr. Caius, when he speaks of "Another sorte which hunteth the Fox and Badger or
Greye onely, whom we call "Terrars". Utilization
Used in stables to keep down vermin, and also to dig out
foxes from the holes. Classification Terriers Size
